Vegetarian Piranhas'

Pacú are commonly sold as 'Vegetarian Piranhas' to home aquarium owners, though the fish are an exceedingly poor choice for the typical hobbyist. Like some of the nasty carnivores it is not like the piranha which has some appearance like crushing jaw system, designed for eating seeds and nuts which could be hazardous, but pacu is of not of this type. One of the kids was to get a surgery after her finger been bitten by the pacú at Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World in Scotland. Observing on the incident in Deep Sea World zoological manager Matthew Kane advised that the pacu will eat anything, even children’s wiggling fingers. When they are a mere 2-3 inches long they are usually available in pet stores unlike other breeds of fish, their growth is not inhibited by a small tank. Indeed, a pacú can reach 30 inches when fully grown -- they can quickly crowd typical home aquaria. Overwhelmed hobbyists are suspected of illegally releasing their pacú into wild waterways.
