Survey: Living on Less, Christians Still Giving, Avoiding Debt:

Three out of four Christian households experienced stagnant or declining income levels during the past year. However, many of those households have still managed to keep debt levels under control, according to results from the second annual View from the Pew, a survey by Maximum Generosity and Christianity Today International.

Only 23 percent of households saw their family's income increase from the previous 12 months. Meanwhile, as the U.S. economic recession continued, 44 percent saw their income stay the same and 33 percent saw their income go down.

Challenges with income did not necessarily result in higher levels of debt, however. The primary debt obligation for 64 percent of respondents was a home mortgage, according to the survey; only 35 percent of households reported car payments, and 70 percent said they actively pay off their credit cards in full every month.

"It's a sign that a growing number of people are learning to actively eliminate and avoid debt," said Brian Kluth with Maximum Generosity.

The View from the Pew results are consistent with ones uncovered earlier this year through the second annual State of the Plate, another constituency survey conducted with more than 1,000 church leaders by Maximum Generosity and Christianity Today International.

"Nearly 40 percent of churches across the country experienced a decline in giving and offerings in 2009, marking two consecutive years of declines," said Matt Branaugh, editorial director with Christianity Today International's Church Management Team. "It's not surprising to see that the economic pinch in Christian households coincided with the giving trends reported by church leaders."

In an encouraging sign for churches, 98 percent of those surveyed in the View from the Pew regularly supported their church and many gave 10 percent or more to their church and ministries. When asked when they learned this practice, 60 percent said it was before age 30.

"This shows tithing and generosity start young and become a lifelong practice," Kluth said.

Belarusian Hindus go on hunger strike after being arrested during outdoor service

MINSK, Belarus - Twelve Hindus from Belarus began a hunger strike on Sunday to protest against what they said was increasing state persecution after this former Soviet republic's lower house of parliament passed a strict new bill on religion.

The seven men and five women were among 17 arrested Saturday evening while singing Hindu songs and hymns in a Belarusian park, said Tatyana Akadanova, who was also arrested but released because she had small children with her.

They were accused of holding an unsanctioned procession and meeting, Akadanova said.

She said the arrest was trigged by a bill passed late last month that prohibits churches will less than 20 years' presence in Belarus from publishing literature or establishing missions and bans organized prayer by denominations with less than 20 Belarus citizens as members.

The bill, which still has to be passed by the upper house of parliament and signed by President Alexander Lukashenko, also enshrines the Russian Orthodox Church's dominant role in the country.

"Persecution has already begun," said Akadanova, adding that the group had earlier been refused permission to officially register and denied the use of a hall to hold their religious services.

The 12 Hindus, all citizens of Belarus, began their hunger strike while waiting in a police processing facility, where they were being held until their appearance in court. Officials at the processing center confirmed that the group had begun a hunger strike, and said that a court hearing would be held soon.

Akadanova warned that if the new bill is signed into law then many Hindus "will be forced to leave the country because of persecution by authorities."

The Russian Orthodox Church, which had supported the bill, complains in Belarus and Russia that other religions are poaching converts from people who historically would have been Orthodox believers.

The Religion of Rome:

The Romans had a practical attitude to religion, as to most things, which perhaps explains why they themselves had difficulty in taking to the idea of a single, all-seeing, all-powerful god. In so far as the Romans had a religion of their own, it was not based on any central belief, but on a mixture of fragmented rituals, taboos, superstitions, and traditions which they collected over the years from a number of sources. To the Romans, religion was less a spiritual experience than a contractual relationship between mankind and the forces which were believed to control people's existence and well-being. The result of such religious attitudes were two things: a state cult, the significant influence on political and military events of which outlasted the republic, and a private concern, in which the head of the family oversaw the domestic rituals and prayers in the same way as the representatives of the people performed the public ceremonials. However, as circumstances and people's view of the world changed, individuals whose personal religious needs remained unsatisfied turned increasingly during the first century AD to the mysteries, which were of Greek origin, and to the cults of the east.

The origins of Roman Religion:

Most of the Roman gods and goddesses were a blend of several religious influences. Many were introduced via the Greek colonies of southern Italy. Many also had their roots in old religions of the Etruscans or Latin tribes.

Often the the old Etruscan or Latin name survived but the deity over time became to be seen as the Greek god of equivalent or similar nature. And so it is that the Greek and Roman pantheon look very similar, but for different names.

An example of such mixed origins is the goddess Diana to whom the Roman king Servius Tullius built the temple on the Aventine Hill. Essentially she was an old Latin goddess from the earliest of times.

Before Servius Tullius moved the center of her worship to Rome, it was based at Aricia.
There in Aricia it was always a runaway slave who would act as her priest. He would win the right to hold office by killing his predecessor. To challenge him to a fight he would though first have to manage to break off a branch of a particular sacred tree; a tree on which the current priest naturally would keep a close eye. From such obscure beginnings Diana was moved to Rome, where she then gradually became identified with the Greek goddess Artemis.

It could even occur that a deity was worshipped, for reasons no-one really could remember. An example for such a deity is Furrina. A festival was held every year in her honour on 25 July. But by the middle of the first century BC there was no-one left who actually remember what she was actually goddess of.

Prayer and Sacrifice:

Most form of religious activity required some kind of sacrifice. And prayer could be a confusing matter due to some gods having multiple names or their sex even being unknown. The practice of Roman religion was a confusing thing.

Roman Gods and Goddesses

The first god was Zeus. Zeus was the king of all gods. It is believed that when he threw down his spear, thunder would rumble and lightning would flash. Zeus is usually seen with a lightning bolt in his hand. In Roman, the name for this god was Jupiter.

Next, there was Hades. Hades was Zeus's brother. Along with being Zeus's brother, he was also the God of the Underworld. Hades is usually represented as having people farming. In Roman, his name is Pluto.

Then, another goddess was Aphrodite. Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty. Aphrodite was the daughter of Zeus and a mortal woman. In Roman, this god is called Venus.

Another goddess was Artemis. She was the Goddess of the Hunt, the moon, animal liberation, feistiness, and feminism. Diana is the name for this god in Roman.

Last, but not least, there was Hephaestus. Hephaestus was the God of Forges. He was also the husband to Aphrodite. This god is called Vulcan in Roman.

Olive Oil's Nutrition And Health Effects:

Evidence from epidemiological studies suggests that a higher proportion of monounsaturated fats in the diet is linked with a reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease. This is significant because olive oil is considerably rich in monounsaturated fats, most notably oleic acid.

In the United States, producers of olive oil may place the following health claim on product labels:

Limited and not conclusive scientific evidence suggests that eating about 2 tbsp. (23 g) of olive oil daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to the monounsaturated fat in olive oil. To achieve this possible benefit, olive oil is to replace a similar amount of saturated fat and not increase the total number of calories you eat in a day.

This decision was announced November 1, 2004, by the Food and Drug Administration after application was made to the FDA by producers. Similar labels are permitted for foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as walnuts and hemp seed.

There is a large body of clinical data to show that consumption of olive oil can provide heart health benefits such as favourable effects on cholesterol regulation and LDL cholesterol oxidation, and that it exerts antiinflamatory, antithrombotic, antihypertensive as well as vasodilatory effects both in animals and in humans.

But some clinical evidence suggests that it is olive oil's phenolic content, rather than its fatty acid profile, that is responsible for at least some of its cardioprotective benefits. For example, a clinical trial published in 2005 compared the effects of different types of olive oil on arterial elasticity. Test subjects were given a serving of 60 g of white bread and 40 ml of olive oil each morning for two consecutive days. The study was conducted in two stages. During the first stage, the subjects received polyphenol-rich oil (extra virgin oil contains the highest amount of polyphenol antioxidants). During the second phase, they received oil with only one fifth the phenolic content. The elasticity of the arterial walls of each subject was measured using a pressure sleeve and a Doppler laser. It was discovered that after the subjects had consumed olive oil high in polyphenol antioxidants, they exhibited increased arterial elasticity, while after the consumption of olive oil containing fewer polyphenols, they displayed no significant change in arterial elasticity. It is theorized that, in the long term, increased elasticity of arterial walls reduces vascular stress and consequentially the risk of two common causes of death—heart attacks and stroke. This could, at least in part, explain the lower incidence of both diseases in regions where olive oil and olives are consumed on a daily basis.

Another health benefit of olive oil seems to be its property to displace omega-6 fatty acids, while not having any impact on omega-3 fatty acids. This way, olive oil helps to build a more healthy balance between omega-6 fats and omega-3 fats.[citation needed]

Unlike the high amount of animal fats typical to the American diet, olive oil lowers cholesterol levels in the blood. It is also known to lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure.

Olive oil contains the monounsaturated fatty acid oleic acid, antioxidants such as vitamin E and carotenoids, and oleuropein, a chemical that prevents the oxidation of LDL particles. It is these properties that are thought to contribute to the health benefits of olive oil.[citation needed]

As they are the least processed forms of olive oil, extra virgin or virgin olive oil have more monounsaturated fatty acids than other olive oil. These types also contain more polyphenols, leading to a healthier heart and lower "bad" cholesterol.

Preliminary research indicates that olive oil could possibly be a chemopreventive agent for peptic ulcer or gastric cancer, but confirmation requires further in vivo study. Olive oil was also found to reduce oxidative damage to DNA and RNA, which may be a factor in preventing cancer.

A high consumption of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are found in most types of vegetable oil including olive oil, may increase the likelihood that postmenopausal women may develop breast cancer. A similar effect was observed on prostate cancer. Other analysis suggested an inverse association between total polyunsaturated fatty acids and breast cancer risk.

Unsaturated oils, such as olive oil, have a short shelf life and are prone to becoming rancid from oxidation, which will produce toxic byproducts and a bitter taste. Unsaturated oils should be protected from heat and light, and avoid using oil that shows signs of spoilage.

Marilyn Monroe (June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962), born Norma Jeane Mortenson, but baptized Norma Jeane Baker, was an American actress, singer and model. After spending much of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946. Her early film appearances were minor, but her performances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950) were critically acclaimed. In a few years, Monroe reached stardom and was cast as the leading lady in such films as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, The Seven Year Itch, and Some Like It Hot.

Marilyn Monroe Daeth and aftermath:

On August 5, 1962, LAPD police sergeant Jack Clemmons received a call at 4:25 a.m. from Dr. Ralph Greenson, Monroe's psychiatrist, proclaiming that Monroe was found dead at her home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California. She was 36 years old. At the subsequent autopsy, eight milligram percent of Chloral Hydrate and 4.5 milligram percent of Nembutal were found in her system, and Dr. Thomas Noguchi of the Los Angeles County Coroners office recorded cause of death as "acute barbiturate poisoning," resulting from a "probable suicide". Many theories, including murder, circulated about the circumstances of her death and the timeline after the body was found. Some conspiracy theories involved John and Robert Kennedy, while other theories suggested CIA or Mafia complicity.

On August 8, 1962, Monroe was interred in a crypt at Corridor of Memories #24, at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Westwood, Los Angeles. Lee Strasberg delivered the eulogy. The crypt space immediately to the left of Monroe's was bought and reserved by Hugh Hefner in 1992.

In August 2009, the crypt space directly above that of Monroe was placed for auction on eBay. Elsie Poncher plans to exhume her husband and move him to an adjacent plot. She advertised the crypt, hoping "to make enough money to pay off the $1.6 million mortgage" on her Beverly Hills mansion. The winning bid was placed by an anonymous Japanese man for $4.6 million, but the winning bidder later backed out "because of the paying problem".

Administration of estate:

In her will, Monroe left Lee Strasberg her personal effects, which amounted to just over half of her residuary estate. She expressed her desire that he "distribute [the effects] among my friends, colleagues and those to whom I am devoted." Instead, he stored them in a warehouse, and willed them to his widow, Anna. Inez Melson successfully sued Los Angeles-based Odyssey Auctions in 1994 to prevent the sale of items taken by Monroe's former business manager. In October 1999, Christie's auctioned the bulk of the items, including those recovered from Melson's family, netting US $13,405,785.

Anna Strasberg then sued the children of four photographers to determine rights of publicity, which permits the licensing of images of deceased personages for commercial purposes. The decision was worth millions as to whether Monroe was a resident of California (where she died) or New York (where her will was probated).

On May 4, 2007, a judge in New York ruled that Monroe's rights of publicity ended at death. In October 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Senate Bill 771. The legislation was supported by Strasberg and the Screen Actors Guild, and established that non-family members may inherit rights of publicity through the residuary clause of the deceased's will, provided that the person was a resident of California at the time of death.

In March 2008, the United States District Court in Los Angeles ruled that Monroe was a resident of New York at the time of her death, citing that the executor of her estate told California tax authorities as much, and that a 1966 sworn affidavit by her housekeeper quoted Monroe as saying that she considered New York City her primary residence. The decision was reaffirmed by the United States District Court of New York in September 2008.

On May 19, 1962, she attended the birthday celebration of President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden, at the suggestion of Kennedy's brother-in-law, actor Peter Lawford. Monroe performed "Happy Birthday" along with a specially written verse based on Bob Hope's "Thanks for the Memory". Kennedy responded to her performance with the remark, "Thank you. I can now retire from politics after having had 'Happy Birthday' sung to me in such a sweet, wholesome way."

Google is now the most dominant search tool on the web, setting the standards that others try to follow and better, as yet unsuccessfully. It was founded in 1998 - relatively late compared to many of the popular search engines - by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who were graduate students from Stanford University.

Page and Brin had been working together on a search engine they called "BackRub" since early 1996, but with the encouragement of Yahoo! co-founder David Filo, they decided to start a company in 1998 and went looking for investors to back them. Google, Inc. was established on September 7, 1998. The founders hired Craig Silverstein - who was later to become Director of Technology - as their first employee, and started the business in a friend's garage.
Google was still in an alpha stage, with an index of just 25 million pages, but it was handling 10,000 search queries every day. The search engine and the company grew quickly through word of mouth, initially with regular web users coming across the tool and finding the results to their liking.

Usage spread rapidly through press coverage, awards and recommendations, whilst Google's effectiveness and relevance, its speed and reliability, plus clean visual effects and 'quirky' nature all contributed to a rapid increase in the number of new advocates.

Google took a major step forward in 2000 when it replaced Inktomi as the provider of supplementary search results on Yahoo. Following this it won further successes and provided search data to Yahoo as its primary results, as well as to AOL, Netscape, Freeserve and BBCi in the UK. This gave Google exceptional coverage of web searches and established its reputation as one of the most reliable and accurate search tools, making it the clear market leader.

Despite losing the Yahoo relationship in 2004, Google continued to increase its coverage of the web search market and developed numerous regional versions of its search tool, both in English and other languages, so that its global dominance grew. In the UK, Google now accounts for over 70% of web searches that are made.

Google has also been actively developing a range of search options, including an image search, news search, shopping search (Froogle) and local search options. In addition, following Google's IPO in early 2005 it has set itself on a course for Internet domination and to challenge the position of Microsoft as the leading provider of computer services. There has been a series of announcements of new products, including the email service Gmail, the impressive Google Earth product, Google Talk to compete in the growing VoIP market, Google Base and Google Book Search, which is part of its ambitious project to make the content of thousands of books searchable online

Microsoft unveils Windows Phones: KIN One, KIN Two
Both new Windows Phones bearing social media tinge are targeted at younger audience

Finally, the much rumored Microsoft's Project Pink phones saw day light officially at an event held at San Francisco. Microsoft has introduced new KIN handsets which are based on Windows Phone and designed specifically for social media enthusiasts. Tagging these new touchscreen handsets as Windows Phone, the new KIN One and KIN Two, these are same two Pink phones which were spotted last year in September. KIN One is a the Turtle Pink phone while KIN Two is the Pure model. KIN phones will be available exclusively from Verizon Wireless in the U.S. beginning in May and will be available through Vodafone in Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom in Autumn.

KIN Spot is like a sharing sandbox where users can share text messages, photos, videos, location and even status updates. All these elements need to be simply dragged and dropped in a single place called Spot. KIN Studio is a cloud based service that backs up the text messages, call history, contacts, photos and even videos automatically to the cloud servers by KIN Studio. Enough storage is promised so that users never run out of space. Both new KIN Phones have touchscreen and QWERTY keypads with curvaceous and glossy body metrics. One interesting feature which both phones share is the Zune media player embedded in the core supporting Zune music as well as video. No support for Zune gaming yet, but we can expect it to arrive later. These phones have built-in FM radio but it's not the HD radio like the one in Zune HD. For Mac users, Microsoft will offer special application to load music from Mac systems (no it's not a Mac version of Zune software).

KIN One is curvy squared slider and appears like a stretched Palm Pre. One features 5.0 megapixel camera with LED flash and is also capable of recording SD Video. KIN One comes with 4 GB internal memory and has mono speaker. On the other hand, the KIN Two is like a slide out phone with full QWERTY keypad and has sports an 8.0 megapixel camera with LED Flash capable of shooting HD video. Two phone has 8 GB internal memory and comes with stereo speakers. Both the phones have dedicated keys for emoticons and Bing Search.

Neither of the phones carries any link or setting that connects to Zune Marketplace or any App market. There are no plans to introduce any sorts of apps for KIN devices.
